“Abhisit-Kasit-Kiat” joined democratic governance forum in Bangkok

In a keynote speech at a Forum on Democratic Governance organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Bangkok, Chair of LI's Human Rights Committee Markus Loening has spoken of the importance of civil society in a vibrant democracy.

Speaking alongside the leader of the Democrat Party in Thailand (LI full-member) and Chairman of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD, LI cooperating organisation) Abhisit Vejjajiva, deputy leader Kiat Sittheeamorn and former LI VP on the Bureau Kasit Piromya, Loening stressed that citizens' involvement in public debates and their self-organisation is crucial for a democratic society. "An active civil society is the heartbeat of democracy" he said.

As part of his presentation he also discussed the legal framework for civil society in Germany and the different ways in which Members of Parliament and Government work with civil society actors.

The Forum was part of a series of events on democratic governance accross Thailand and looked into the roles of diverse sectors in promoting democratic governance draiwing lessons from international best practices.
